10 Foods To Try As You Backpack Through Europe

I LOVE FOOD!! One of the best things about traveling is experiencing the dishes in different countries. If you are a travel foodie, there are a couple of must try dishes in Europe you need to put on your bucket list!

Yes, I have a ‘food bucket list’ and I’m slowly eating my way downtown (and all over the world).

You can’t get a real cultural experience if you eat your regular meals abroad. Don’t be that person who goes to Starbucks in France!

Here are some of the best foods you have to try if you are backpacking through Europe.

Pasta in Rome

You can’t go wrong with ordering Carbonara in Rome (or any Pasta dish really!). There’s this lovely restaurant called Armando al Pantheon which is just a 10 minute walk from the Trevi Fountain and will not disappoint.

Gelato in Rome

It doesn’t have to necessarily be Rome, Gelato anywhere in Italy is a win! But if you’re already in Rome, taking advantage of our first suggestion, why not grab some gelato for dessert on your way to the Trevi Fountain?

You’ll be crossing off three major things on your bucket list.

Paella In Barcelona

Paella is a Spanish dish with a base of rice and can have fish, shrimp, chicken, tomatoes, onions and numerous other ingredients mixed in. Depending on your personal preferences, you can customize it to perfection.

Paella is such a classic, you can’t go to Spain and not try it. If it’s your first time trying it, consider ordering the Traditional Paella. It contains a little bit of everything from jumbo shrimp, chicken thighs, chorizo sausage, prosciutto, and mussels which add a unique texture to the dish.

Tapas in Madrid

Tapas are classic Spanish appetizers, typically served with a beer or two. Tapas can vary from Jamon Serrano (cured ham), pan con tomate (bread with tomato, olive oil, and garlic) and gambas (prawns often fried) just to name a few.
The Spanish don’t play around when it comes to their appetizers and there is something here for everyone. Although tapas are considered ‘appetizers,’ the Spanish don’t consider it a starter. They typically start with tapas and end with tapas.

Tortilla Espanola In Madrid

A Tortilla Espanola is basically a Spanish omelette but it’s also so much more than that! It is made with eggs (duh!) and potatoes, and sometimes onions, chives, and/or garlic.

Trdelník in Prague

A trdelnik is one of the most common pastries in Prague. You’ll find them all over the streets and they can be customized to you pleasing.

A basic trdelnik is a spit cake made of rolled dough. The dough itself isn’t all that sweet, but the outside has a lovely caramelized richness that will satisfy any sweet tooth.

Fish and Chips in London

I feel silly putting this one on the list because it’s just SUCH A CLASSIC. Having fish and chips in a local pub in London was the first thing I wanted to do in this city.

The perfect combination of flaky, fried cod and salty, warm fries just makes my heart so happy.

Escargot in Cannes

Feeling adventurous? Escargot (french for snails) is filled with garlicky and comes with bread to dip with. You might just surprise yourself with how much you enjoy this dish.

Crepes in Paris

Crepes were born in France and they are a staple of French culture. You can decide between sweet or savory and they are sold everywhere.

Bonus points if you have one under the Eiffel Tower!

Bavarian Pretzel in Munich

These larger-than-life Pretzels are as mandatory to try in Germany as the beer. They are a popular snack in Germany and you can find them in pubs as well as on the street.

The best thing is they are freshly baked and just oh-so-warm. *drools*
